(I credit my sources and contributors, unlike other people who have used and continue to use this website
for biographical and journalistic purposes and monetary gain without any mention of my name or a link back to this site
while I have paid for but never earned a single penny from it or the article I wrote based on it in Pirates magazine, Spring 2007.

A Tribute to
Robert Newton: www.robertnewton.net

the talented and versatile British actor who brought the character of Long John Silver vividly to life in Disney's 1950 classic Treasure Island thus defining our present-day concept of the quintessential pirate. Though it was literally Robert Newton who put the "Arr!" in "pirate," his career encompassed a variety of memorable roles, from villains to leading men, in the works of great writers such as Shakespeare, Dickens, and Shaw.

Notice: Due to occasional problems with my hosting service, this site has twice gone down for several days. In case of future interruptions, you may wish to bookmark the off-site message board, which should not be affected by such outages and where any news or questions you may have can be posted. Also, it is recommended you use the address www.robertnewton.net to ensure you are directed to the current location of the site. If that address is down, please be patient; it can take up to a day or two for any changes to be processed, but the site will be restored.

A note from the Webmaster

New information and places in the narrative where text has recently been changed, added, or deleted (except in the Calendar section) are generally followed by this symbol: .

As some visitors have noted, I don't always have the time to update this site as intensively as I would like to, but be assured there are always more photo galleries, reviews, and other surprises planned, as well as visitor contributions I just haven't had a chance to do justice to yet. Over the years, I've learned that maintaining a popular website can be an overwhelming task unless you remain almost obsessively devoted to it. Even the most seemingly minor maintenance tasks most people take for granted, like combatting guestbook and chatboard spam, updating the Calendar and News page, and responding to the many time-sensitive requests I get for information require perpetual attention to the site, even though it doesn't always show. So, while on the surface this site may at times seem neglected or out of date, I assure you I remain committed to making it the best tribute I can to one of the greatest and most influential actors of the 20th century.

Therefore, please do stop back often to check out what's new. And be sure to join the discussion on the forum/"chatboard" to share news and keep in touch with other fans. I do check it regularly, and I always look forward to reading your thoughts about this great actor and his work. In fact, I find it much easier to respond to generalized questions via that forum than through individual e-mails.

Of course, for more personal or business matters, contributions, or specific suggestions to improve the site, I welcome your e-mails as always. Please click here to contact me directly. (Please contact me in advance before sending large files or attachments as my e-mail account space is limited, and they may bounce.) However, be warned that, while I would love to reply to every e-mail I receive in a timely manner, I'm a notoriously bad correspondent/procrastinator, so if you don't hear back from me within a reasonable amount of time, please feel free to send a reminder. (And know that you're in good company!) I always appreciate hearing from other Robert Newton fans and have the best intentions of writing back, even if it takes a while. Apologies to all those to whom I still owe responses!! (Again, the forum is a great place to get answers to generalized questions or comments.) In an effort to decrease the amount of spam I receive and make it easier for me to recognize legitimate e-mail, I have begun using the contact form offered by Bravenet services rather than posting my e-mail address on the site. Until I figure out how to create a contact form that runs on my own website, I apologize for the inconvenience of sending you offsite and subjecting you to advertising in order to submit your message. If you're not interested in their special offers, please make sure you do not check any of the boxes on the page. If you're concerned that they may store your e-mail address (although I've never had a problem myself with Bravenet myself), you might prefer to include it in the text of your message. Thanks!

And now for the obligatory disclaimer: I maintain this site strictly as a hobby and to share my appreciation of Robert Newton's work with others. Although credit has been or will be given where known, quotations and photos presented remain property of their respective copyright holders. (In general, all movie stills are promotional materials belonging to the film studios who originally produced them.) Should the use of any of these materials be considered in violation of copyright laws, I respectfully request that the holder of the copyright contact me, and I will glady give credit and/or remove any offending material. Similarly, I ask that you do not use my original material and concepts without giving credit, as the introduction, biography, and most of the other text on this site (except where otherwise credited) were composed by me as a result of years of unpaid research (with assistance from the Newton family and others as noted below), and are thus copyrighted. It should therefore go without saying, but apparently even professional newspaper editors and video producers are unaware of intellectual-property laws, so I reiterate: When using information provided on this site, you must credit this site as its source, just as I have done my best to credit my own sources. As a courtesy, I also request that you notify me as to how you've used my material; in return for such notification, I will gladly provide a reciprocal link to your site and/or post a news item promoting your publication/product.

Links to this site are always welcome and appreciated, and a link banner is available here for your convenience. Thank you!

"Thanks, pal!"

Many thanks to my sister Janette Dauenhauer for Web advice and the use of her film books; to my father Frank Dauenhauer for proofreading and for his excellent suggestions; to my computer-graphics teacher and friend, Cathy Leyland, for assistance with the banners; to my Internet Design teacher and fellow appreciator of great acting, Tony Gerardi; and to my husband Chuck Ciriello for his support, encouragement, and the additional links he provided.

I'm also greatly indebted to contributors Paul Anderson, Steve Bingen, Tom Bright, Bill Burn, Glenn K. Call, Bruce Carney, Mary Condon, Vikki Cole-Richardson, Lorraine Crennan, Eva Danø, Jennifer Emerson, Mike Emmer, Susan Gantz, Mervyn Graham, Kitty Hawk, Tim Hufnagle, Erling Jacobsen, Kristine, Philip Leibfried, Bob Miller, Todd Malone, Priscilla Moreno, Jim Morgan, Erin O'Neil, Roy Parker, John Pickens, Greg Prevost, Brad Richards, Wini Richardson, Roland Rod, Tim Sanderson, Spev Moon, Trisha and Venie, and Leane Verhulst. Thank you all!

A huge "Thanks, pal!" to my good friend and cinemaphile Diane Hall for tirelessly coming up with and sharing additional information about Robert Newton just when I think I've exhausted all the sources there are to discover and for encouraging me to keep digging for more buried treasure.

I am especially grateful for the kind cooperation of Robert Newton's sons and daughter-in-law: Kim and Cheri Newton, who provided corrections and additional information, and Nicholas Newton, who provided further information and wrote several paragraphs about his father's stage work for the biography. Many, many thanks to all.

And thank you for stopping by!
